Critical Senate District 37
Absentee Voter Information
Current problem:
The vendor that Cobb County and two other counties use to print and mail absentee ballots has experienced issues that have delayed their shipment. Because of this, some voters have yet to receive their absentee ballot in the mail. We are hopeful all ballots will be received by voters sometime this week, but it will require effort to ensure their ballot is returned correctly in order to be counted.
Why this is a problem:
Cobb County Elections and state law require that a completed ballot must be received in their main office no later than 7:00 pm on November 3rd. There is NO grace period for ballots postmarked by Election Day, ballots being delivered to voters late, or any other reason. The deadline will be enforced. That means there potentially could be many voters whose absentee ballots will not be accepted and counted towards this election because of the late delivery issue.
What can be done:
EVERYONE that has been affected should call the Georgia Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816 to document their issue, regardless of the outcome.
If the voter has NOT received their ballot but lives nearby, it is highly recommended they vote early in-person as soon as possible. A poll worker at the early voting polling location will have you sign a form to cancel your absentee ballot, then you will be able to
vote in-person as usual. Early voting ends Friday, October 30th at 7:00 pm.
If the voter HAS received their ballot and lives locally, it is highly recommended that they hand-deliver their absentee ballot directly to the main office or one of the dropboxes at an early voting location as soon as possible. Ballots must be received BEFORE Tuesday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm or they will not be accepted and counted.
If the voter HAS received their absentee ballot but lives out of the area and cannot easily commute here to vote in-person, it is highly recommended that they use ashipping service such as UPS or FedEx to overnight their completed ballot to a trusted family member who will hand-deliver their absentee ballot on their behalf. Ballots must be received BEFORE Tuesday, November 3rd at 7:00 pm or they will not be accepted and counted.
If the voter has NOT received their absentee ballot and lives out of the area and cannot easily commute here to vote in-person, keep a close eye on your mail. If you are away at college, contact your mailroom directly to have them try to locate your ballot in the event they have not yet sorted it. Make a plan to overnight your ballot back to a trusted family member. If you never receive your ballot, or by the time you receive it, it is impossible to return it in time, please contact the Voter Protection Hotline at 888-730-5816 to make sure your information is documented. While it may not be possible to secure your vote for this election, you may be contacted in the future to help legislative efforts.
